With all this wonderful sunshine we’re having in Europe this summer, the lakes have certainly been a favourite place to escape to for many of us. Doesn’t it make you wish to magically have a sixpack stomach – at least just for summer time – haha. Imagine, taking up stand up paddling (SUP) may just be the answer.

Without even realising you are exercising, standing up on that board, keeping balance and paddling is a brilliant way to work your abdominal muscles. In fact the rockier the waters the better. Paddling against a stream force is also brilliant for working your muscles even harder.

Your leg muscles also get to have fun helping the core in keeping your balance. In fact SUP is the perfect cross-trainer, providing both aerobic and strength-based training. If you get tired standing it becomes even easier paddling on your knees.

Three things you really need to take into account when deciding what to wear whilst stand up paddling:

  1. Sun protection

No amount of sunscreen is ever going to protect shoulders and upper body enough when spending longer amounts of time on the water.

2. Comfort

Whatever you wear should be comfortable and certainly not weigh you down if you fall into the water – almost inevitable as a beginner – smile.

3. Good fit

Wear something that fits well and doesn’t move around as you paddle.
