How to Style SS17 Best Trends – part I

It´s that time of the year again. Allergies slowly start taking control of your life. Bugs everywhere. It´s too hot for ¾ sleeves yet too cold for off-shoulders. I´d gladly skip Spring if it wasn´t for new clothes and accessories. Stores looking as bright as ever for the first time in months. The endless possibilities of new outfits and the return of old friends kept in the closet for so long. Brace yourselves for a series of posts giving you all the info you need to create the best SS outfits.

Spring Summer 17 is a voyage through different decades: a bit of fanciness from the 40´s, something from the 70´s, a lot from the 80´s, a touch of 90´s. Sounds at least eclectic, right? But you´ll be surprised to see how it all blends in.

TS3TL

There is nothing more feminine than a tea dress and Miuccia Prada sure knows it. Bringing the 40´s shape back with other decade´s prints, it´s easily styled with classic colorful coats and fancy loafers. If you´re thinking irreverent, try wear them with some cool sneakers. If you´re feeling classy, lace up shoes are always a good option.

Untitled design (30)

Think about Bianca Jagger and her white blazer. Now think about David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust. Feeling enough inspired already? So now we can talk about how shoulder pads are back and how cool will it be to style them. Make sure you know your proportions to understand what will suit you better because shoulder pads are pretty cool but also tricky to style. I usually avoid blazers with that kind of shoulders but I love cropped tops with bold shoulders. Here´s a little tip: when using shoulder pads try to pair them with something that marks your waistline (like a belt over a blazer, for example).

KENZO

Are they ever not a trend? There is something so visually appealing about metallics that makes us own at least a metallic piece each season, don´t you think? Metallic pieces allow you to play with different fabrics. Personally, I like to wear them with silk and lace pieces. I got a pleated midi skirt on sales last season (which you might have seen if you´re following me on Instagram) and I’m sure “she” will be a conversation starter the whole season.

5TS

Typically, you´d wear sequined dresses, tops, and even pants during the night, right? Think again. Creative directors and brands invite you to shine all day. For a more casual look, you can pair your shiny pieces with denim and sneakers or loafers.

Inked6TS_LI

Having a tendency for darker colors, this SS may just be a turning point for me. If, just like me, you always end up buying something black, take a look at Spring collections. You´ll realize bold colors are here to stay. It´s up to you to mix a bright yellow with black and stay in your comfort zone. But we all know the fun happens outside that zone so if you´re feeling up to a change, try mixing that strong red with pink. Just remember that you make the rules, so if you like the visual impact that the oddest color scheme creates, go for it.

P.S. Gradient color schemes or one colored outfits are always a good option if you´re looking for something less visual impacting in terms of contrast. You´ll get extra style points if you play with different fabrics.

7TS

Time to set your inner Sandy (the “Tell me about it, stud” version, of course!) free. Parkas and moto jackets. Lots of spikes. Studs. Perfect for styling with fishnets, graphic tees and for a more preppy look, floral dresses. It´s time to take your Doc Martens and Converse from the closet. But you know what else would look cool with all these 90´s pieces? Lace up shoes and a pair of edgy ballerinas.

So, any favorites so far? Let me know in the comment section how will you be styling these trends! Stay tuned for Part II 😉

Olympus Pen 7

These days every smartphone can take amazing photos. Every day for the past year my photos were taken with my phone or iPad. I always thought “Nah, why should I buy my own camera when these two are perfectly capable of taking amazing photos?”. Wrong. As my blog started to grow I understood the problems of not owning a good camera (photo quality, not being able to give them the look I wanted, … ).

When I started looking for cameras I knew I wanted a compact camera. I knew exactly what specific details I wanted (when looking for a camera always ask yourself “what for will I use it?”). I knew I would be the one taking 95% of the photos so I looked for something that I could easily connect with other devices and with flip screen.

The Olympus Pen 7 was completely out of my options, at first. Known as “the blogger camera” it was just too expensive. The day I was going to buy a Panasonic Lumix, I found one of those Christmas packs with the Pen 7. I told “her” we were meant to be.

KIT

This may vary, though there are some things that are always sold with the camera like the charger and the flash. The kit comes with a lens, though you can buy them separately (I’d suggest not to because you´ll end up paying a lot more). Mine came with a case and an SD card (careful when choosing your SD card. This camera is very very fast at shooting photos and processing videos, so anything less than 16GB won´t work properly) and two different manual instructions, one with the basics and the other on a CD with full detailed information that is really helpful and definitely makes you take the most out of your camera.

o6o7

  • The high quality of the photos. Everything from the colors to the contrast looks amazing.
  • There´s an Olympus app (Olympus Image share) for ios and android that allows you to use your smartphone as a remote control. Set your tripod, control the timer through your phone once you´ve connected it with your camera and you´re ready to go. I do this ALL the time! This app also allows you to edit photos and import them to your devices. This saves you a lot of time, especially when you´re in a hurry and need to post something on social media;
  • The screen flips. Which means your selfies or non-selfies will look better than ever. Everything from those “from where I’m standing” photos that you usually don’t see is now controllable. It means that the perfect angle is now officially possible. I take a lot of flat lays and before this camera, I often needed to climb to a chair to get the perfect photo. Now I just flip the screen until it looks the way I want.
  • It´s easily transported on your smallest bags (and you all know how most of my bags are… J ) Unless you´re using a huge lens, you´ll see you can take the camera everywhere in your purse.
  • The design of the camera. That retro design that makes Olympus Pen different from any other camera. A true heartbreaker.
  • I don´t use it much for video but I’ve searched vloggers reviews and apparently, the micro is pretty good (so you don´t need to buy one separately).

o3

o4o8

  • The price. Unless you get lucky like I did, this is a pricey camera. Is it worth it? Every single (insert here your currency), if you´re planning to use it a lot. Most of them come with a lens (and not just the camera body). Sometimes Olympus sells kits with more than one lens which is a great opportunity that I, unfortunately, missed. Lens are pretty expensive as you may know.
  • When you´re using a tripod you can´t flip the screen all the way down. When you´re photographing this is not a problem because of the remote control option but when you´re filming a video this may be a problem.

o9

  • If you´re taking pics just for social media adjust the size. I do this a lot with Instagram because I hate cropping my pictures. I adjust the screen to 1:1 before taking the photo and then import it to my phone when I’m done.
  • Don´t use the auto mode. I understand that in the beginning, it´s easier, but it´s outside the auto mode that the magic happens. Now before the magic happens don´t freak out with the menus. They´re pretty complex because the camera has a lot of different settings that you can personalize. Sure it takes time to understand how the camera works, but once you do, you´ll have highly personalized photos capable of reflecting your own style. Activate all the menus on the camera and just start trying everything. There´s a Fn button that opens a little side menu where you can change settings like saturation, light, movement, … I started with that. But for more detailed settings you´ll need to activate menus.
  • Pen 7 has touch screen which is very useful when you want to focus a certain object only. It´s not the only way to focus, of course, but it´s more intuitive. If you´re using the kit lens (14-42mm, my case) in order to create that blurry background that a 45mm lens easily captures I’d suggest playing with focus points and adjust the lens until you have reached the perfect blur.
  • Because you won´t see the full screen flipped down when using a tripod, use your phone as a remote control and set the timer (you can change the timer on your phone once connected).
  • There are plenty of artistic modes to explore (without needing a specific lens) that probably will save you edition time (like that one where the background is black&white and the only pops of color you see are for example red ones).
  • You can automatically add your signature or a stamp to your photo using the Olympus Photo Share app editor (another time savior).

o5

VERDICT

It´s been 2 months since I bought it and I use it on a daily basis. 80% of my instagram photos are taken with this camera. I would recommend it to anyone who´d take the most out of it (because of the price).

This post was written mainly for people who don´t own the camera but are thinking about buying it. It´s my personal experience in general with this camera and why I recommend it. If you have any specific/technical questions, feel free to ask them in the comments 🙂

Audaviv Jewelry

After receiving so many kind and thoughtful messages about my accessory game I decided to share with you some tips and tricks. Truth is, everyday life is not a street style glam photo but of course everyone wants to look their best. That´s why during the week I spice up my accessory game with tasteful delicate pieces. Lots of them. The secret is to layer the right pieces properly and I guarantee you you´ll have the most stylish results without looking like a walking Christmas tree 😉

Having lots of jewelry, I came to the conclusion that what was missing in my collection were delicate pieces to give a sophisticated yet casual look. The thing is, I had delicate necklaces and bracelets but after a while they lose color and shine and gain that ugly used look – that´s when I don´t have the courage to neither throw them away nor use them.

So when I became an Audaviv Ambassador my first pieces were – of course – delicate bracelets to build the perfect arm candy. Audaviv is the destination for independent brands whose work was carefully handpicked so you get that very personalized treatment that otherwise you wouldn’t have while shopping and you won´t find that much people wearing the same thing as you (i´m still waiting for the necklaces I want to re-stock, so you get the idea). Plus, you won´t have to scroll and apply lots of filters to hide tacky jewelry (which is new to me, because I find myself constantly doing that).

1

2

I never wear only one necklace. More is more. When the choker obsession (oh God, what a terrible name for a necklace!) became a serious thing, I started layering chokers with small delicate necklaces, mostly with little charms. During summer it´s also cool to layer with body chains.

3

This is my everyday motto. I grab several small necklaces and layer them by adjusting each with different lenght. That way you´ll have a slighty longer necklace and all the others will have smaller lenghts. The necklaces below are the ones on my Audaviv wishlist. The second one is currently out of stock so I guess I´ll have to wait until it´s back so that I can finally releash my inner Sailor Moon 😉

4

5

Arm Candy – the act of putting together random (or not…) pretty bracelets and accessories. Lots of them. Since I have a watch addiction (always remeber this place is a non-judgemental zone) I like to begin my arm candy with a good watch. Then I´ll add the bracelets that I believe that look good with the watch (e.g. rose gold watch, rose gold bracelets). So as you can see my arm candy is usually planned and almost never random.

6

I almost never use rings and bracelets on the same hand because most of times the final combination seems tacky to me (but hey, that´s just me!). Usually I think it´s better balanced having the rings on one hand and the bracelets and watch on the other. I also combine the rings and the bracelets (e.g. golden bracelets with golden rings).

7

This is probably the only bright rose bracelet I own. Or piece of jewelry. Everything else has a dusty rose shade. The reason why I love it so much is because it´s only one bracelet but looks like two (which means more layers therefore more hapiness to me). Because I´m a monochrome addict this bracelet is often the only pop of color. And trust me, it makes all the difference!

8

I wear my bracelets backwards all the time (and not because they slide – good thing about these beauties it´s they´re adjustable. It´s probably the first time I own jewerly that doesn´t fall off my tiny wrists). Just take a closer look. Wouldn´t it be a shame not to wear them both ways? You´ll also get 10 points for creativity.

9

Of course being an accessory lover I always pay attention to the details. Style is always in the details. In this case, the golden chain on my bag matches my little bracelets.

10

When you shop at Audaviv you feel special (and don´t we all like that?). You get your jewelry inside a gorgeous pink box perfect both on the inside and outside. Light pink paper, little bags with your order inside, a card, instructions on how to take care of your new pieces, … I think you´re getting the idea. That´s the thing about choosing startups – not only you´re supporting creative people but you´re also receiving in exchange what you wouldn´t get otherwise. Quality, personalization and a bunch of unique pieces.

how-to-2

As always would love to know your thoughts so meet me on the comment section 😉

Aquazzura X Farfetch

It´s no secret that above clothes, accessories and shoes will always be my favorite pieces in any outfit. Why? Ever tried on a simple white tee and jeans outfit with statement heels? So you must know the feeling 😉 That´s why I was thrilled when Farfetch contacted me and told me about their new collaboration with Aquazzura: a new capsule collection brought together by 4 super talented and influential women with Edgardo Osorio.

The Very Deena

As soon as I saw leopard and zebra heels I knew exactly what to do: mix and match prints and add a strong pop of color. Easy. I went for blue because it´s one of my favorite colors to pair with animal print and monochrome shirt and skirt that contrast in terms of style with the biker jacket. The contrast between the skirt and the heels are my favorite part of this outfit.

The Very Pascaline

The fringed boots are my favorite pair from this capsule collection. They´re so versatile that it was hard for me to only create one look. I went for a cozy oversized knit sweater to play with the different textures. Lately one of the biggest street style trends that conquered my heart is wearing heels and boots with socks and actually show them so I decided to try that trend with the fringed boots and loved the result.

1. Aquazzura X Farfetch Very Pascaline booties / 2. Vera Wang cable knit sweater / 3. Marni socks / 4. M2malletier bag / 5. Givenchy studded cuff

The Very Claire

The first time I saw the golden platforms I thought about the amazing Studio 54 days and Bianca Jagger in a suit. But since I love mixing pieces from contrasting styles, I decided to pair them with a simple graphic tee and – of course – a coat with stripes. One of my favorite colors to mix with golden is green. It instantly adds a touch of sophistication. In this case, I think the tee adds the right ammount of irreverence and the coat gives the sophisticated touch. To finish, I choose a golden Saint Laurent bag because I always try to match my accessories with my shoes to make the outfit more interesting.

The Very Holli

Do you ever decide what to wear based on your shoes? Cause that´s what happened here. As soon as I saw the different shades of blue I knew I had to have more shades of that same color and a good pop of yellow. The frayed jeans are always a good option when you want to make your heels stand out – I usually do that when I´m wearing a basic top or a simple tee. Once again, the color scheme was created from the accessories and shoes.

2016 Revisited

2016 was the year I decided to get serious about blogging. I got my own domain, added new categories i´ve always wanted to explore, gave the blog the makeover it needed. I started collaborating with brands and was lucky enough to meet fantastic entrepreneurs. I met amazing people who showed me that love and support often comes from where you least expect. It´s an incredible feeling to look back and see how much i´ve grown and how Dissecting The Look is slowly becoming what i´ve always wanted: a place to inspire other people, learn about their opinions and points of view.

Of course, none of this would be possible without all of you. Words cannot describe how lucky and happy I feel to have such amazing readers who constantly show their support in the most unpredictable ways. It´s a pleasure to blog in your company. So a big thank you to all of you who take a bit of your time to read my posts, comment them, share your love on instagram, send me supportive e-mails. I promise 2017 will be full of surprises and lots of inspiration. I´ll leave you with a small collection of 2016 pictures 🙂

Layering with Happy Socks

Just as important as the pieces you choose to wear is how you actually wear them – that´s how you show the world how stylish you are 😉 But believe me when I say that never in a million years I´d see myself embracing this new trend… Until, of course, I tried it. If you search between street style photos you´ll surely find lots of cool examples that will make you want to pair your most colorful socks with those amazing velvet shoes you wanted to buy so badly but still haven´t because, oh well, who wears winter sandals with socks?

When Happy Socks contacted me I knew I had to do this post. Fashion is all about taking risks and leaving your comfort zone, right? So that´s just what I did… Happy Socks are perfect to style because of its huge variety of cool prints and bright colors – who would want to hide them? Definitely worth looking at their amazing collection.

Quick tips to style shoes&socks: When in doubt, go for neutral socks. If you´re not a fan of big contrasts nor prints, stick with the same color (example: dark blue heels and baby blue socks). If you´re wearing socks with prints, try to pair them with something that has the same color scheme.

As always, i´d love to meet you on the comments section and know how you´ll be styling your socks & shoes this Fall 🙂

Fall Trend Report – Accessories

I may be a monochrome enthusiast and I may even love a lot more than I should a good minimal outfit. But when it comes to accessories I sure know ‘More is more and less is a bore’ (quoting Iris Apfel, the accessory God). Fact is, accessories are my personal everyday statements. So again, this season I can’t help but feeling a bit like Alice in Wonderland. There are so many accessories capable of changing an outfit instantly that I had to put an entire post together just for them. If you  follow me on Instagram you already know about my tiny bag addiction and you’ve probably seen some of the bags featured on this trend report. You see, I spent the whole August month carrying only one tiny little bag everywhere due to a monster called Luggage Space and not only I missed my collection but I also found they were all perfect for Fall. Blame it on creative directors. Again.

Nautical Hat

Nautical and military are obvious Fall trends almost every year. But in this particular case Gigi Hadid for Tommy Hilfiger was the cause for every fashionista’s inner sailor’s release.

Left Top: ASOS (Gigi Hadid for Tommy Hilfiger); Bottom Left: ASOS; Right: Vogue.com

The Beret

Tip n°1 to achieve the fabulous Parisian style. Perfect accessory for a really cold day but mostly for a bad hair day.

Bottom Right: Gucci (via Vogue.com); all the others: ASOS

The Choker

I know by now you’re all proud owners of several chokers. Maybe even too much of them, but hey – i won’t tell how many I have and won’t ask you either 😉 So far we’ve seen simple one colored chokers. Fall brings new ones, much bolder and creative. Authentic victorian pieces, ready to help you take your layering game to the next level.

Top Left and Right: ASOS; Bottom Left: Chanel (via Vogue.com); Bottom Right: Versace (via Vogue.com)

The Belt

When I think of vintage pieces belts are the first accessory to cross my mind (I’ll always be searching for the perfect black and gold Yves Saint Laurent logo belt). Gucci, where all the vanguard artists are, brought to Fall/Winter the famous logo belt as well as a sentiment of nostalgia and the temptation of a new – and quite expensive – acquisition. I shall not vacillate.

The Skinny Scarf

The versatile accessory. It can be a head accessory, a choker, a bracelet, a giant bow to your plain shirt.

The Statement Earrings

Because nothing screams more maximalism like bold jewelry.

The Mini Statement Bag

All time favorite, but that you already knew 🙂 Forget essentials like wallets with every single card you have and huge makeup bags because they won’t fit. And remember that phones these days belong on your hand. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to carry inside your bag car and house keys.

LFW Street Style Part II

Part II or how to master the print mixing game. And wear fringes. And what about a total white outfit with pops of red? Have you noticed how elegant a woman in red is? So many questions pop my mind when I look at street style pictures. Am I the only one who barely thinks about trends when scrolling through them? Of course we can always spot trends (and this time I tried as you can see) but I’m always more focused on the person. Street style taught me so much when it comes to finding my own style and identity. A person comfortably trending will always be prettier. Not because she’s trending, no. Because it’s someone who feels comfortable in its second skin – clothes.

LFW Street Style Part I

We patiently wait to see the newest trends and inspirations for each new season. It´s not only the clothes or accessories that are about to be revealed. It´s the environment, the light, the artistic process behind every show. But when it comes to street style everything changes. Trendsetter or not, everyone will be showing their personality through what they´re wearing. Multiple inspirations, mixed trends, things that only the person who´s wearing it considers trendy. That´s the beauty of what happens outside a show. And that´s why I consider street style such a strong source of inspiration. Are they waiting to be photographed? Of course. Does it make street style less authentic? Absolutely not. What about you? Do you also think the “magic” begins outside the shows?

Fall/Winter 16/17 Shoes

Like I told you on the first trend report, this Fall collections have too much information. Maximalism strikes again and you can spot its trace elements both on the clothes and accessories. I´ll be showing you what I believe to be the essential shoes for this season on this trend report and the next one will have all the accessories. Please note that it´s not my fault. Personally, I blame creative directors. The creative process of every important fashion house was just remarkable this Fall/Winter. I, of course, was a victim.

Loafers

It was Fall 2015 and Alessandro Michele had a perfect vision for Gucci. The loafers emerged and they´re not going anywhere anytime soon. If there´s any versatile shoe for this Fall, it´s the loafer. So, have you picked yours?

img_9394
Bottom Middle: Gucci (via net-a-porter.com); all the others: ASOS.com

Flat Slides

You´ve already seen them during summer and even last Fall. I must say I have mixed feelings when it comes to flat slides because I don´t find them that comfortable or practical. But i´ll tell you if this relationship makes any progresses. A piece of advice: don´t run while wearing them.

img_9395
Top Left: Gucci (via Vogue.com); All the others: ASOS.com

Mid-heel Shoes

Also known as “Granny Shoes” and definitely a very possible acquisition for this season. I find them very comfortable and super stylish, perfect to wear with frilled jeans and a cozy oversized knit (you know, for those days when you don´t want to put much thought on what you´re going to wear).

img_9399
Top Left : Chloé (via Farfetch.com); the others: ASOS.com

Ballerina Shoes

I didn´t love ballet very much when I practiced it but I did like my ballerina shoes very much and used to wear them around the house. You can transport yourself back to your childhood days with a classier version of ballerinas or an edgier one. Blame it on Miu Miu. As for my Bimba y Lola edgy ballet shoes, I find them perfect to wear with culottes.

img_9396

Mary-Janes

The classic. Is there anything more feminine than a good pair of Mary-Jane´s? Again, a good reminder of your childhood days. And because velvet is one of the main Fall fabrics, if you want a win-win situation, find yourself a pair of these in velvet. If you´re able to find something that goes terribly wrong with Mary-Janes, please let me know. I haven´t so far. P.s. a tracksuit doesn´t count. We´ll talk about athleisure later.

img_9398

Ankle Boots

I know, I know. But history tends to repeat itself. So ankle boots are a thing, again. But this time the ankle boot trend comes bolder. You can choose from a huge variety of prints and play mix&match with your outfits now more than ever. If you´re not much of a bold prints kind of person, you still have lots of options: pvc, suede, velvet… everything with only one color or a little statement on the heel. Can you guess which one I daydream about? 😉

As always, I’d love to know what you think. Which are your favorites? See you in the comment section and stay tuned for the next trend report 🙂
